Located at the southernmost point of the North Island, Cape Palliser Lighthouse is an iconic New Zealand landmark. The rugged coastline, dramatic cliffs, and the lighthouse itself create a magical setting, especially under the night sky.
When I planned this shoot, I wanted to capture the lighthouse as a beacon against the celestial backdrop. The conditions were perfect that evening, with clear skies and minimal light pollution. Using my astro-modified camera and star tracker, I was able to combine a detailed foreground with a vibrant Milky Way arching above.
This shot required careful planning. I researched the position of the Milky Way and the moon phases to ensure the perfect alignment. The biggest challenge was the climb up the steep stairs to the lighthouse, carrying all my gear. Once there, it was all about patience—waiting for the right moment to combine the terrestrial and celestial elements seamlessly.
Submitting the image to the New Zealand Landscape Photography Competition was an exciting decision. I knew the competition would be tough, with talented photographers showcasing diverse landscapes across the country.
When I found out my image had won second place, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. It was incredibly validating to see my work recognized on such a platform, especially with a subject so close to my heart. This milestone has inspired me to continue exploring and capturing the beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes.
Winning this award has further fueled my passion for photography. As I plan future shoots, I’m inspired to seek out unique perspectives and push the creative boundaries of my work. Cape Palliser Lighthouse will always remain a special location for me, reminding me of the magic that happens when preparation meets opportunity.
Thank you for following my journey. Here’s to more adventures and capturing the stories hidden in our incredible landscapes!
